As a website designer, one of the most common questions I see is, “why do I need a website?”
There are several answers to that question, but in this blog post, I am going to discuss the top 3 reasons why you need a website.
Your Website is Your Business’s First Impression
As humans, we invest time into how we want to be portrayed to other people. We tend to put more effort into our physical appearance when meeting someone new or when we are getting ready to give a presentation/business pitch. If that’s the case, why wouldn’t we invest that same amount of time and effort into our website when that is the first impression of your business?
One of, if not the first, thing(s) that people do when hearing about a business is search for a website online. Businesses without websites are often perceived as untrustworthy, not legitimate and not professional. Lacking a website is often one of the top reasons that people often turn to business competitors due to credibility concerns.
Additionally, just about every business today should have a website. It doesn’t need to be big or fancy, but having that established presence is crucial. Not having a website can also give potential clients the impression that your business is outdated and limits your potential for growth as a whole.
A Website is NOT the Same as Social Media

A common myth is that having a social media presence is enough to promote a business and there’s no need for a website. While there is truth to the fact that social media is a fantastic way to promote your business, it is a supplementary and promotional tool for your business. Social media is not the primary method for gaining new customers.
Social media limits accessibility for different demographics and is accessible solely based on if you have a social media account or not. Again, this is great for promoting your business but should be used more as a supplemental tool in addition to a website.
I have social media accounts for my business, but 99% of my leads come through my website. My social media is a way to engage with clients, stay connected and have an additional way to promote my business. My website is the core of my business and is where clients go first for my contact information, submit an inquiry, view my services and learn more about who I am and what my business does.
A Website is Personal
One of my favorite questions I love to ask clients during my initial call with them is, “what makes your business stand apart from competitors?” It always makes me so excited to hear clients tell me about the unique aspects of their businesses.
“It’s family owned.”
“I’m passionate about … and want to share that with my customers.”
“I started it when I got laid off from my previous job.”
“I took a chance.”
Your business is a personal thing. It is YOURS. You want people to see how much it means to you and build that personal connection with everyone who interacts with it.
A website is one of the best ways to personally showcase not only the uniqueness of your business, but also why it matters to you and how it can help your customers.
When I build a website, I create it based on how you want your business to be portrayed. It makes me so happy to hear clients say that I took their vision and made it a reality. One of my main principals at Salt and Light Web Design is, if it’s important to you, it is important to me.
